Symbols used in this blog

Here is a list of symbols used in this blog. It will grow as posts containing mathematical formulas are added. The given unit is not always used (sometimes liters are used for volumes, and similar substitutions).

Latin Symbols

Symbol Unit Description
$A$ $\mathrm{m^2}$ Area
$k$ $\mathrm{W/(m^2\,K)}$ Overall heat transfer coefficient
$K$ $\mathrm{W/K}$ Overall heat transfer capability; $K = kA$
$P$ $\mathrm{W}$ Power
$Q$ $\mathrm{J}$ Heat; $\dot{Q}$ is used for heat flow
$t$ $\mathrm{s}$ Time
$T$ $\mathrm{K}$ Temperature (also see $\vartheta$)
$V$ $\mathrm{m}^3$ Volume

Greek Symbols

Symbol Unit Description
$\alpha$ $\mathrm{W/(m^2\,K)}$ Heat transfer coefficient
$\lambda$ $\mathrm{W/(m\,K)}$ Thermal conductivity
$\vartheta$ $^\circ\mathrm{C}$ Temperature (also see $T$)
